The Community Greenhouse

This greenhouse is a prototype developed within Cross Innovation Southern Sweden, combining social innovation with sustainable energy technology. Through smart solutions for heat storage, solar energy, and humidity regulation, it creates a space that fosters both cultivation and community.

Innovative and Sustainable Greenhouse in Röstånga

The Underlying Needs

The Community Greenhouse addresses two major needs shared by many smaller rural communities in Skåne/Blekinge.

  • Small-scale growers and communities need energy-efficient systems to grow food year-round without relying on fossil fuels or expensive heating solutions.

  • There is a need to create inclusive meeting spaces where residents, creators, and technicians can collaborate on sustainable development.

The Solution

By combining art, technology, and social innovation, The Community Greenhouse has been developed as a testing ground for sustainable energy technology and community building.

The work has resulted in low-tech solutions such as:

  • Passive solar heating (Trombe walls) to reduced the need for external heating.
  • A  sand battery to store and evenly distribute heat over time.
  • A masonry heater that functions both as a heat source and a social gathering point.
  • Smart climate control systems (drip curtains and humidity regulation) to create optimal growing conditions.

The combination of these technologies makes the greenhouse unique as both a social and technological innovation platform.
